Visual Basic error message

On opening, Microsoft Word displays a Visual Basic error message.

This is probably caused by an error in an automatic macro. Close Word, then locate the file normal.dot and rename it normal.old. Restart Word. If the error has gone and all is well, delete normal.old. This destroys all macros and customisations, so if you don't want to do that, copy the file back to normal.dot and then locate and delete the faulty macro using Tools, Macro.
